Caring for your cats hens in their own home
Hens are fast becoming the new pet of choice, with an estimated 3 million hens now being kept in people’s back gardens. Hens are now a viable option when people are choosing pets along with traditional choices like dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. It is now increasingly common for hens to reside in backyards in our towns and cities.
And the best thing about them? A regular supply of FRESH eggs!! You’ll never buy supermarket eggs again once you’ve tasted your own and the novelty of finding a freshly laid egg in your henhouse never wears off.
Not to mention the huge characters that chickens are – they are massive timewasters as you can sit and watch their antics all day. Never a dull moment with hens around. You DON’T need a cockerel with your hens so spare a thought for your neighbours; life will be a lot quieter without one!
Katz at Home is well placed to care for your hens as my husband and I had almost 50 of them a few years ago. We had a variety of breeds and colours which between them produced 7 different coloured eggs – the traditional brown, dark brown, blue, white, green, cream and tinted colours.
Small bantams are ideal if you have children – some breeds are very child friendly – or if the eggs are your main priority then the large fowl breeds are better.
One of the most important aspects of having hens is keeping them safe from foxes and other predators – you can never be too cautious where foxes are concerned!! Katz at Home is happy to offer any help and advice if you are thinking of taking the plunge.
